The Story of SIXTO
The year was 1970. A Latino-American folksinger by name of Sixto Diego Rodriguez is singing and writing songs in Detroit, Michigan. A record producer hears him, and is thrilled. This man could be the next Bob Dylan!!
They record an album. It bombs. Sells less than 100 copies. Undaunted, they record another: "Cold Fact". It bombs. Sells less than 100 copies.
Sixto decides that maybe he is not the next Bob Dylan, after all, and gives up on his dream, and takes a job in construction. He works construction in Detroit for the next 30 years.
BUT........
A bootleg copy of Cold Fact finds its way to South Africa (during Apartheid) and it gets played on the radio. People go crazy!! Who is this guy? He's the next Bob Dylan!! He's as big as The Beatles!! Who is he? (Sixto Diego Rodriguez is a stage name, not a real name, and, since it is a bootleg tape, there is no information to go by.)
Polydor, a big record company in South Africa produces a professional version of the bootleg tape, and it sells MILLIONS!!
In the 70's, and the 80's, Rodriguez is as big a name in South Africa as The Stones and The Beatles, and they think that he is big all over the world, too. They are kind of isolated in South Africa, due to geography, and due to Apartheid. The only thing that his fans know for sure... is that he is dead!! The rumour is that he killed himself on stage. But how? Why?
In the 90's, two fans decide to answer those questions. They analyze the lyrics of his songs for clues, and finally they figure that Dearborn, Michigan is referenced, which leads them to the music scene in Detroit, which leads in turn to the producer of Cold Facts. They call him up. "Did you produce Cold Facts?" they ask. He says yes. "Where?" "In Detroit."
They come to the all-important question: How did he die?
"What do you mean?"
"We know he killed himself... but how? And why?" they ask.
"I saw Sixto yesterday. He is not dead."
It is like they have been told that Elvis is still alive!! Like Jimi Hendrix is strill kicking around in Toledo!!
They call Sixto's house. He hangs up on them... thinks it is a crank call. They call back. "You have the wrong guy! I am a construction worker, not a singer!!"
Finally they convince him that they are for real, and Sixto visits South Africa, and he tours to sold out concerts all over South Africa. He gives his money to charities.
This story has been told in the doc "Searching for Sugarman". You must see it when you get the chance!!

READER SUBMISSION
This tale of service gone wrong came to me from a friend and follower of the blog:
My wife and I decided to play golf in Gananoque last Friday evening. Coincidentally, that afternoon I got an e-mail from Groupon which offered a coupon for a half-price fish & chips dinner for two in Gananoque. I purchased the coupon and then got a response from Groupon : allow up to 24 hours for "delivery" of your coupon. So, I printed the web pages that showed the transaction and headed off to Gananoque. We arrived at the restaurant after the usual rush hours and it was almost deserted. The host, a middle-aged man, met us at the door and inspected my print-out. He wouldn't commit to the deal but went away to "ask the owner". Five minutes later he returned with the bad news – couldn't confirm the transaction code so wouldn't honour our pledge. As we are about to leave, does he extol the virtues of their menu and prices ? No. Does he offer us a free salad appetizer to entice us to stay despite the Groupon denial ? Nope. He simply watches two hungry customers walk away. AMAZING !
How do these businesses stay alive ? Mob money ?!
(P.S. We went down the street to the Old English Pub and had a lovely dinner of... fish & chips ! ... and beer. Came home to see that the Groupon coupon had "arrived" and had EXACTLY the same transaction code as the pages I took with me...
MY COMMENTS:
Rule number one:
NEVER SAY "NO" TO A CUSTOMER!!
Rule number two:
NEVER, EVER, SAY "NO" TO A CUSTOMER!!
Honour the coupon and be happy that you have people walking in. Honour the coupon, even if it isn't a coupon for your establishment. At Ramekins, people would, every so often, bring in coupons from other places. Our clientele were of the "older" age group. We would figure out a way to honour them. Why not?
